If you are used to buying on a centralised exchange, fund an on-chain position by sending the right asset to the network it uses. Your wallet balance on another network will not work until you move it across.
Confirm the position’s network and token
Check the position details for its network, required token, and amount before moving funds. The same token name can refer to different assets on different networks, so confirm the token’s contract address when the app provides one.
Also check which wallet address controls the position. A wallet address may look the same across several networks, but its balances are separate. Keep some of the destination network’s native coin for gas, the fee paid to process transactions.
Move and swap funds in a single plan
Use these steps to move funds from your wallet and prepare the amount the position needs:
Write down the target. For example, if a position needs 500 USDC on BNB Smart Chain, note the network, token, amount, and wallet address. This gives you a clear destination to check against.
Check your source balance. Confirm the token and network you currently hold, plus enough native coin to pay the source transaction fee. Moving tokens from Ethereum, for example, usually requires ETH for gas.
Compare the amount you will receive with the amount required. A cross-chain route may charge a network fee and a swap fee, and the exchange rate can affect the final amount. If a quote estimates 503 USDC arriving from 510 USDC sent, that leaves only 3 USDC above a 500 USDC requirement; allow for any later price change too.
Send the cross-chain transfer and swap. A bridge moves value between networks; a swap exchanges one token for another. Some routes combine both in one flow. Wormhole’s documentation describes one common mechanism: tokens are locked on the source chain and a wrapped version is minted on the destination. Other routes may work differently.
Wait for the destination balance to update, then settle. Check that the correct token arrived on the correct network and that you still have gas for the position transaction. If the expected token does not appear, check the transaction status and token contract before trying again.
Leave room for the final transaction
A transfer can complete while the position still cannot be opened: the destination wallet may lack gas, or the received token may be a wrapped version the app does not accept. Ethereum.org’s bridge explainer describes how bridges can create wrapped assets, so verify the asset accepted by the position before sending a large amount.
In my place, I would move only what the position needs plus a modest allowance, and keep destination gas separate. If my funds were on another network, I’d consider quickswap: cross-chain quickswap can move and swap assets across chains in one flow, helping prepare the required token on its designated network.
